LAX

LAX is laid out like a horseshoe with terminals (Orange) on the outside and parking structures (Red) on the inside. All traffic enters from the Northeast corner passing by Terminals 1, 2, and 3 on the North, then the Tom Bradly International Terminal on the West, then Terminals 4, 5, 6, and 7 on the South. Departures use the upper level (Blue) roadway while arrivals use the lower level streets (White). In the terminals ticketing, check-in, and boarding gates are usually on the upper level while baggage claim, car rental, hotel and transportation phones, QuickAid kiosks, and Travelers Aid are on the lower level.

Outside on the lower level are taxis and shuttle buses to hotels, car rentals, parking lots, and public transportation stops. There are several door-to-door shuttle services which cruise the airport looking for customers. Taxis charge by the trip whereas shuttle services charge per person so it may be less expensive to share a taxi. You can get a feel for prices from the QuickAid kiosks or ahead of time from their LAX homepage.

LAX to Downtown

For those attending a convention or feeling unconfident about the infamous L.A. freeways,
there are several ways to get to your hotel.

Airport Bus

The Airport Bus leaves at 15 minutes after the hour for hotels in downtown L.A. and
Pasadena. Fares are $12/adult and $7/child. The bus will stop at several hotels in the
downtown area before going on to Pasadena. The schedule calls for 1/2 hr to downtown
and 1 hr to Pasadena. (This seems optimistic.)

Door-to-door shuttle vans

Shuttle vans circle the airport with signs for the general area that they
service. After you board they may still circle three or four times to get a fuller load.
Each passenger is taken directly to his door which may mean pulling off the freeway
several times before reaching your destination. The advantage here is that the vans are always
available and that they will take you exactly where you want to go at less for 1 person than a taxi.
Also you can schedule an early morning pickup for the trip back to the airport.
Pricing to downtown is about $12 with slight discount for additional persons in the party.

Taxis

Taxis charge about $26 to downtown for the entire party and they go directly to your
destination. They are the best option for a party of three or more or if time is a real factor.
Fares to other areas may be considerable higher based on the meter.
