If you plan to go outside your hotel at all, you should rent a car. Public transportation in Los Angeles is atrocious. It can take hours to cross town by bus. The subway covers just a small portion of downtown. The one exception is the excellent light rail line from the Long Beach hotel area to the downtown subway. You may be able to use the MetroLink for your area. Here is an alternate schedule.
There are several bus tours available such as from Anaheim (Disneyland) to Universal Studios or Hollywood but you are locked into their timetable.
Just to give you an idea of how much we Angelenos love our cars, here are some average daily statistics of the number of autos passing selected points on these freeways:
| Santa Monica (10) | 325,000 |
| Ventura (101) | 325,000 |
| San Diego (405) | 308,000 |
| Santa Ana (5) | 291,000 |
Santa Monica municipal bus line.
